1. Create a base of expertise that will have a major impact on national decisions regarding environmental issues. 
2. Promote environmental education and awareness among students at the Hebrew University and increase general public awareness about environmental issues. 
3. Promote inter-disciplinary research along the following lines: 
   • Develop a deeper understanding of processes and identify indicators of local, regional, and global environmental changes (e.g., biodiversity, climate change);
   • Study the effect of human activities on environmental factors such as soil, air, and water, and examine options for addressing these effects;
   • Investigate the interrelationships between societal changes and the environment;
   • Design new tools and methods, involving technology, the law, economics, and planning, for coping with environmental hazards;
   • Analyze new approaches for managing natural resources and for advancing concepts for sustainable development;
   • Encourage regional and multinational environmental research.
